Spring has sprung and summer has now made its entrance! The beginning of summer is such a beautiful time and there are plenty of things that people are looking forward to. Whether you are headed out of town, excited for your first vacation post-quarantine, or just excited to be able to safely see your neighbors again for the 4th of July, the summer generally brings happiness to everyone around you.
For those who have some allergies, there might be some things you are just dreading in the summer season. These generally include pollen, trees, and other outdoor annoyances. But for some, bees are the true issue! Those will a bee allergy know that a wasp or any other type of honeybees, yellow jackets, and paper wasps can be seriously damaging to everyone, but deadly to those with allergies.
Luckily, there are a number of DIY options as well as professional wasp control methods that you can put into place to help protect yourself or those around you. Wasp protection is especially important to think about around young children. After all, if they have yet to be stung by some sort of bee, you may not even be aware that there is an allergy to protect them from yet.
Follow along to see Okeena Pest Control’s best ways to protect yourself and your family from wasps, bees, and other venomous stingers this season.
Plants Can Be One Of Your Defenses
Natural repellants come in all different options, including plants, and sometimes the essential oils that come from those plants. Some plants to consider adding to your garden include:
These types of plants can be extremely helpful in keeping wasps and other stingers away from your home. As you know, if you don’t make your home a place that they want to me, you will drastically reduce the risk of you being stung.
When it comes to essential oils, you might be able to get away with placing a few diffusers around your yard with spearmint, eucalyptus, and other useful preventative pest oils that can be found here.
Get Rid of Anything That Attracts Wasps
When wasps and other bees are surrounding your home more often than you are expecting them to or think that they should, it is time to investigate what is attracting them there. At this point, it is going to be all about wasp control rather than wasp prevention – considering these pests are already invading your outdoor space, and maybe even your indoor space.
One of the first things you can do to cure this issue is to remove all of your food scraps, floor crumbs, snack wrappers, open trash cans, and anything else that could possibly make your home more attractive to wasps. Something you should always keep in the back of your mind is that if you are going to be attracted to a scent or whatever, it is highly likely that wasps will also be attracted to it. This can include anything you have growing in your garden, especially if it is something like a vegetable garden.
Finding a Wasp Home
This can be one of the scariest things, I think everyone can be in unison on that issue. It is important to note that there is no way to know where they will plant their nests, it can really be anywhere. But some good places to start are anywhere you think a bug could hide. By identifying these places, you can fill these cracks and openings with caulk after exterminating the nest. This way, you will successfully eliminate that nesting area for any future wasps that try to invade your space.
Some of the cracks and crevices that these pests could be using as a nesting area include:
- Umbrella polls
- Nooks around your home
- The outer walls of your home if there is a crack opening
